Future Internet

The Service Web 3.0 project began in January of 2008 focusing on the realization of a Service Web: a Web of billions of services relying on advanced infrastructure for properly supporting the integration of data and processes via semantic technologies; ultimately, a constellation of service ecosystems spanning between businesses, third-party organizations, and end users.

ict_2008Due to overlapping objectives, Service Web 3.0 was steered towards supporting the EU’s Future Internet (FI) initiative a month into the project. Upon request from the European Commission, Service Web 3.0 now leads and supports several working groups under the Services and Software Architectures unit focusing on the development of an Internet of Services, supporting a larger, more complex network proposed in the FI scenarios and research challenges. In the Fall of 2008, Service Web 3.0 co-orfis_sti.org_imageganized two FI-related networking session at the ICT Event 2008 in Lyon, France and established the Future Internet Symposium (FIS), the first of which was held in Vienna, Austria in 2008,  and the second in Berlin, Germany in 2009. The Service Web 3.0 consortium is now organizing the 3rd FIS (2010) to again take place in Berliin, Germany, from September  20-22, 2010, as weil as preparing new networking session proposals for ICT Event 2010 to take place in Brussels, Belgium from September 27-29, 2010. The Service Web 3.0 consortium members have been actively participating in the recurring Futue Internet Assemblies, the last of which took place in Stockholm, Sweden from November 23-24, 2009; the next is scheduled to take place in Valencia, Spain from April 15-16, 2010. In addition to co-chairing and supporting the FI Service Offer and Search and Discovery Groups, Service Web 3.0 contributed towards and co-editted the first FIA Book: "Towards the Future Internet - A European Research Perspective," and prepared a poster displaying Service Web 3.0 survey results and paper submission for the second FIA book. Check the website for more details.

postera1-thumbIn order to raise awareness and stimulate contribution towards the Future Internet initiative, Service Web 3.0 produced a short film highlighting basic themes such as an Internet of Services; an Internet of Things where in principle every physical object becomes an online addressable resource; a Mobile Internet where 24/7 seamless connectivity over multiple devices is the norm; and the need for semantics in order to meet the challenges presented by the dramatic increase in the scale of content and users.

To accompany the film, we've published a high-level roadmap, providing summaries of the developing FI challenge domains (e.g. Internet of Services, Internet of Things) and the potential benefit in the utility of semantic technologies. We've recently published two specialized roadmaps focusing on the future role of services and semantic technologies based on several workshops attended by members of both the FI and semantic technology communities, in addition to the feedback from the Service Web 3.0 survey.sti-video

In short, the Future Internet is a European initiative which brings together over 80 projects within six working groups to create a new Internet to meet Europe's economic and social needs. In the area of Services and Software Architectures, Service Web 3.0 is one of two Support Action projects representing over 20 contributing projects.
